Southern Highlands Drive Day Mk III : 21st March 2009

Had yet another great drive yesterday. We started at Loftus Oval at 8am. Most of us anyway. As usual, Avril rolled up at 8:30am and we left straight afterwards. In total, we had JohnG, MeiLing, Jasmine, Lee, Snapper, Peter, Avril and Floody, in addition to Fiona, Alex and myself. So five MINIs, a Polo GTI and a 135i.

Our first leg saw us pass through the Royal NP, along Sea Cliff Bridge, up Bulli Pass, onto Picton Rd and then Mt Keira Rd, detour to the dead-end and back on Harry Graham Dr, down Mt Keira Rd, onto the freeway to Albion Park Rail for fuel up. We then headed over to Jamberoo for morning tea at the bakery. Lovely coffee, pies and pastries!

Second leg was a quick loop up Saddleback Mtn via Jerrara Rd, Saddleback Mtn Rd, and Fountaindale Rd. Then back into Jamberoo and up Jamberoo Mountain Rd. We stopped at Robertson Pub for lunch but not before a loop to Kangaloon, Tourist Rd, and a return trip on Macquarie Pass (Alex spewed! Literally). The service at the pub was abysmal. Half our table were served very quickly while the other half (myself included), who actually ordered first, had to wait 1 1/2hrs to get a meal that included partially cooked chips! Very disappointing - they're usually much better.

After a LOOONG lunch, we headed off on the third leg to Kangaroo Valley via Wildes Meadow. We then went straight through to Cambewarra Mtn on Moss Vale Rd, cut across the ridge on (the other) Tourist Rd, turned back to Bellawongarah and down Kangaroo Valley Rd, hung a right onto Wattamolla Rd over to Berry. The latter road is unsealed for a couple kms, and was very skatey!

After a visit to the sourdough bakery in Berry, we headed for home in Albion Park. Floody and JohnG then discovered the joys of open-top MX5ing with a (very) quick run up Macquarie Pass. At least that's what they claimed. I suspect the lovely couple, with their matching white t-shirts, must have found a quiet hideaway for a romantic interlude! They did return with very large grins.

Dinner was a scrummy feast of homemade tandoori chicken and coriander/lemongrass chicken done on the BBQ. Lot's of beer, wine, etc consumed and JohnG was snoring on the lounge by 9:30pm!

Thredbo Weekend 12-14th Dec 2008 : Day 1
 Review by Bryan (Guran)

We met at Pheasant's Nest servo at around 9am on Friday. All except Avril & Liam who arrived an hour later! Our convoy south consisted of Lee & Lynn, JohnG & Mei Ling & Jasmine, Avril & Liam, Richard, Al, and Fiona & Alex & I.

It was raining and foggy the entire day! We zipped down the Hume Fwy before turning off at Goulburn. A quick loo & snack stop at Maccas before I led the diversion down Braidwood Rd, Tarago and Bungendore to Queanbeyan. We all refueled at Queanbeyan ... except for Capt Al who spat the dummy when they wouldn't turn on his pump. We dropped in on MiniGolf at his office for a chat. Then went in search of some lunch in Manuka.

After doing a scenic tour of all back streets and multi-storey carparks in search of enough parking for our group, we gave up and headed out of town. On the way to Cotter Dam, we lost Capt Al whose radio had died and consequently didn't get my turn-off instructions. We eventually managed to get him back on track and then made quick time for the cafe at Tidbinbilla for a very late lunch. Still raining, we returned to Canberra via Tharwa and vainly searched for a servo with 98 so that Al could refuel. With that eventually sorted, we hopped onto the Monaro Hwy for the last leg to Cooma and our motel.

The motel was a real laugh with decore straight out of 1973! Al was first to prop at the bar and proceeded to shout all the rounds. Thanks mate! Floody arrived soon after. We ate dinner at the motel restaurant which was a pretty good feed, if pricey (my rogan josh lamb curry was awesome!).

The motel also sported a "smokers room" which proved popular with all the cancer-stick-addicts. Few non-smokers were willing to join them though ... congrats to Floody for his bravery.

Day 2
After a hefty breakfast in town, we all met at the Maccas in Cooma (including a few VWVortex additions) and then Floody led us out on the big adventure. We thought our prayers had been answered with the morning opening to blue skies and a fresh breeze. But that didn't last.

It was raining, foggy and very windy most of the day. Not great driving weather! Still we had an awesome if slippery drive. First break was at Kiandra. The main road was closed beyond Mt Selwyn so we had to detour via Selwyn and several kms of dirt road before rejoining just to the west of Cabramurra.

The conditions were woeful so we didn't stop at the Selwyn carpark/skidpan. Awesome roads across to Khancoban! Then onto the Alpine Way and had a good run until we encountered a massive fallen tree that blocked the road just before Geehi.

We struggled to make any progress on clearing a path, before a local thankfully arrived with a chainsaw and chains to clear the road. Most of the group quickly departed leaving Fiona & I struggling to fit Alex back in the car, and Avril still jogging back to her MINI. I met up with the group again at Thredbo and we waited for Avril. Eventually Avril caught up with us, and we regrouped in Jindabyne for another very late lunch.

Now with full bellies and totally knackered after several hours of strenuous driving, we headed back to Cooma ... most going via Vic's suggested detour through Dalgety. Back at the motel, several weary people were seen to head for their rooms to catch some zzzz's. They surfaced later on when the pizza and beer arrived.

Entertainment for the rest of the night was thanks to music played through (mainly) Richard's Cabrio parked in front of our rooms, with Richard, Fiona and JohnG dancing the night away. That lasted until the battery died on his MINI and I had to clutch-start it so we could close the roof. A fun night.

Day 3
After breakfast in a variety of venues, we met again at Maccas, decided on the easy route home and then off we went. Al and Floody were in the lead, and they were soon well out of sight. The rest of us (Avril, JohnG, Lee and me) made our way via Queanbeyan to Goulburn Maccas were we finally caught up with Al & Floody (who had driven thru Canberra). Then we split up for the final (very boring) leg home.

Thanks again to Floody for organising a great weekend drive. The roads through the Snowies are simply awesome and provide a test of your hard-driving stamina. Hopefully next time we do it, the weather gods will look more kindly upon us!

The Biker "Tex" & Dog "Bundy"
I found this info on a forum the Author HORIZON-DOC
Tex used to have a dog named Cash , they as a pair set many records , raised much money for charitys and gave unmeaserable amounts of smiles to kids and people all around Australia.

Cash and Tex covered over 300,000 klms on various bikes and at the end were sponsored by Aprilia.
Cash was the first dog in the world to cover an 11 second pass at the drags (W.S.I.D.)
He was also the first dog anywhere in the world to be honoured in a National Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
Unfortunatley "Cash " passed away on 24th June 2005 ( R.I.P ) when in a severe storm slipped from the bike and was struck by an on-coming car.

This not only rocked those who have been touched ( through charity work) by them both , but also rocked the motorcycling community.

Since that terrible day Tex now has a new companion, his name is "BUNDY"

In 2006 a little ray of sunshine came into Tex's life in the form of “Bundy” a Smithfield or sometimes called “stumpy tail Blue Heeler.

She is now two & a half years old and has covered around 100,000 klms, mainly on Hayabusa’s.
She is officially the fastest dog on a motorcycle having recorded 280kph.
Tex is also submiting their paperwork to be recognised American based “Iron Butt Association” . ( which we believe is the first dog rider).

They recently covered 2044klms in 23 hours making them eligble for an SS2000 award.
Bundy is also the first dog to become a member of the Australian FarRiders.
The Below photos are Bundy on her Hayabusa. ( doing 130kph on a long run to Darwin).
